The bar chart illustrates the proportion of the four ways that are used for tackling rubbish in some European states. Overall, the dominant methods of waste disposal in the Netherlands were recycling, whereas the UK, Italy and Spain landfilled a large proportion of their litter. While in the Netherlands two-third of all the rubbish was recycled, the figures for the other three countries were not that high. In Italy, 20 per cents of waste were dealt with by using this technique, albeit the percentage for Spain and the UK only one out of ten. Almost 65 per cents of waste was landfilled in the UK, whereas the proportion of waste discarded using the same method was equal in Italy and Spain at 40 per cents. Meanwhile, only around 8 per cents were landfilled in the Netherlands. The percentage of waste that was burnt in this country was slightly higher- one-tenth and in Spain this figure was triple. Nearly a quarter of trash was burnt in Italy as opposed to 4 per cent in the UK. An almost equal proportion- around 18 per cents- was used as chemicals in Italy, Spain and the UK, which had a difference by around 3 per cents lower in the Netherlands.
