The given pie chart illustrates the percentages of students at one college in England who could communicate by different languages besides their mother tongue in separate years 2000 and 2010. Overall, it can be seen that the proportion of British students who were multilingual increased after a decade. It’s noticeable that Spanish was the most popular foreign language. Looking at the detail, in 2000, the number of British students who could speak Spanish accounted for the highest percentage of 30% and this figure was exactly three times as low as the proportion of students who could use German or two other languages. In addition to, 20% of students were capable of using only their mother tongue while the figure for student communicating by French or another language were equal, at 15%. After 10 years, there was a 5% increase in the number of students who could speak Spanish or another language as well as two other languages. Meanwhile, the number of monolingual students decreased by half, compared to an increase of 5% in the proportion of students interacting French. Only the number of students using German stayed unchanged over the given period.
