The flow chart below illustrates the typical stages of traditionally published novel. bbVwX
The flow chart shows how a novel is usually published from the beginning where the author comes up with an idea till the book is printed and published. Overall, this is a linear process with 15 steps that involve a range of different people including the author, agents, editors, publishers, and booksellers. In the first stage, the author has an idea of what to write. The author goes through writing a quick layout of the story and personally revises the draft. Once the revised version is ready, the agent is the next person who receives the author’s novel. If any agents are interested in the novel, they will reach out to the author. If both parties are satisfied with the contract, the author will sign and the partnership begins. The next stage is when the agent helps the author to edit the novel. After revising, the agent submits the novel to publishing houses so that the editors can take a look. As the stage progresses with the editors, one may bring up an offer for the novel. If multiple editors are interested in the novel, the agency must schedule an auction. Once the agency and the publisher agree to a contract, the author will sign it. The last stage of the process involves the author and the designated publishing houses editor discussing if any last changes are needed. When the final draft is ready, the publishers plan a marketing scheme and contact various bookshops for setting up a sales point.
