The shown chart illustrates the climbing population in some of the world’s major cities between 1970 and 2010. It is noticeable that Japan held the largest population while Bombay stood at the top in terms of growth rate. In 1970 Tokyo had about 16 million citizens, which increased estimately by 7 million every 20 years and managed to defend its place as the most populated city over the period. Significant growth can also be found in Bombay and Jakarta, where the population doubled twice in 1990 and 2010. Therefore, they went from least populated cities on the graph to the top three right after Tokyo.
