Expenditure on other goods made up the largest percentage in Britain, at 36%, while the figure for Hong Kong was slightly lower, just 28%. In contract, in Hong Kong the greatest single expense was housing at 32% compared with 18% in Britain. The following proportions of food in Britain and Hong Kong were 22% and 27% respectively.
In the same year, in Britain another major expense was transport, at 17%, and this figure was nearly two times higher than that in Hong Kong (9%). In both countries, the smallest percentage of expenditure was on clothing. There were 7% in Britain, but this was much lower in Hong Kong (4%).
