The chart illustrate the proportion of houses which are either rented or owned in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. Overall, it is observed that, renting followed a decreasing pattern; however, owning a house, in the mentioned 93 year period, witnessed an upward trend. In contrast, this patterns experienced changes in 2001 and shifted to the opposite direction. In England and Wales, almost 80 percent of the houses were occupied by tenants. A gradual descent, except the stability—about 70%—between 1939 and 1953, is observed starting from 1918 and ending in 1991. As a result, after the aforementioned period, it decreased about more than half of its initial value; hence, plummeted approximately to 30%. Then, it stayed the same for following 10 years and slighty soared in 2011. Minimally higher than 20% of the houses were owned in 1918. During the increasing trend, just like the rented houses, the proportion—slightly higer than 30%--stayed the same in the same 20-year interval. Until 2001, half of the popupation swithced to the ownership and this resulted in skyrocketing of the total proportion which became almost 70%. Inaddition to that, this is followed by a small descent of about 5 millions. On top of that, proportion of house owners and tenants were equilized in 1971; both of them accounted for the half of the population.
