The chart demonstrates the gender distribution of students carrying out scientific research across a range of disciplines at a UK university in 2019.
Male students made up a large proportion of the student group in subjects relevant to the study of objects and materials, namely physics, astronomy, and geology. The gender group was noticeably large in the field of physics counting up to virtually five times as many male students as female ones. Female students exceeded male students in subjects related to the study of living matters, viz. biology, medicine, and veterinary medicine. In veterinary medicine, female students outnumbered male students by a ratio of two to one while in biology, albeit female students were more than male students, the gap was narrower.
All in all, the chart shows that at this university there were differences in the type of scientific research undertaken by male and female students.
