The following bar graph presents number of trips using different modes of transport in year 1990 and 2010 of a country to travel to and from school emphasising only on children aged five to twelve years old while making a comparison showing the change of preferred mode of transport ovetime.
Over 4. 1 million trips were made by car in year 1990 while approximately 11. 1 million car trips occured in year 2010. A large number of students walked to and from school in 1990 as per the graph showing 12. 2 million trips were made by walking while in comparison to that only 6 million trips were made by walking in year 2010.
Cycling was not as used mode of transport as walking in year 1990 but was still adopted more in comparison to cars counting to overall 6. 1 million trips approximately. Though, only 2 million trips were made by cycling in year 2010, the least amongst all.
The bus had the least significant difference in terms of year, counting to 7 million trips in year 1990 and 5 million trips in year 2010.
Walking and communting with bus together to reach and travel back from school is also widely opted mode of transport due to the distance between bus station or bus stop and home or school. Approximately 5. 9 million trips were made using walking and bus in year 1990 and 2. 5 million trips in year 2010 which is quite less.
To summarise, there is vast difference in 20 years in terms of mode of transporation used by children to travel to and from school. The advancement of technology and availability of it to maximum citizens is reflected in this graph since parents help their children commute from cars. But the walking and cycling has been reduced which is necessary to a certain level to have regular physical activity along with physical education in school.
