The bar graph compares the ratio of the population in the urban region around the world in the years 1950, 2007 and 2050.
Overall, all trends of the population in cities from different continents experienced gradual declining growth throughout the period from 1950 to 2050. Furthermore, in all regions of the world, by 2050, the percentage of the urban population will be more than half of the total population in each region.
In 1950, the largest percentage of the urban population lived in North America and Oceania, 64% and 62% respectively, while the smallest percentages were found in Africa and Asia, 15% and 17% respectively. By 2007, however, the percentage of urban population had more than doubled in Africa, to 37%, and in Asia the urban population had almost tripled, to 41%. At the same time, urban population growth in North America and Oceania was modest. In North America, the urban population grew by 15% and in Oceania by 11%.
The largest increase in urban population by 2050 will be in Africa, where the urban population will grow by a quarter to 62%, and the smallest increase will be in Oceania, at just 5%. In 2050, however, Africa will have the smallest percentage of urban population of any region of the world, while North America will have the largest percentage of urban population, with almost all (90%) of its population living in cities.
