In 1986, the US imported just over 5 billion Us dollars in terms of seafood, this figure kept climbing gradually to reach 10 and 20 billion dollars in 1996 and 2016 respectively. In the meantime, it is predicted that seafood importations will drop moderatly to under 20 billion dollars by 2026.
In terms of seafood sources, in 2016, the US imported the largest volume of its conumption from China which accounted for 28% of the total of imports, while Thailand and Canada made up for 23% and 16% respectively.
