A heated discussion is whether learning a foreign language is easier for children, but others think adults can do a better job at that. As for me, I am in favor of the latter statement.
Firstly, adults can understand new knowledge quickly by comparing it with the first language that they already know, so that they can learn a foreign language more efficiently. Secondly, most adults have a clear purpose for learning. For instance, translators need to learn a foreign language so that they can earn higher a salary, which means that they have strong motivation to do that. Thirdly, adults are more self-discipline than children, and less likely be distracted by some irrelevant things, such as toys or cartoons, which makes them pay more concentration and practice on study.
However, I have to admit that children do have some benefits at learning a foreign language. For one thing, when learning a foreign language, children might do better at speaking because they are more likely to imitate foreign language speakers, and they are not afraid that others will laugh at them if they speak wrongly. For another, children are more full of energy and have a better memory, and they are more enthusiastic to explore and to learn new things, which are the physical advantages for them to learning a foreign language.
To sum up, imitation and having physical advantages might be useful at learning a new language, but I still strongly believe that self-discipline and goal-oriented are more important, and adults are better at that.
