Overall, the UK residents had visited abroad more than overseas residents visiting the UK. In 1979, a little over 10 million residents visited abroad from the UK, while only 10 million overseas residents managed to visit the UK. By 1984, that crossed over 15 million UK residents venturing abroad, while a little more than 10 million foreigners came to visit the country. By 1989, the number of UK residents going abroad surpassed 30 million, as compared to 20 million overseas residents coming to visit the UK. Since then, the gap had started becoming wider. In 1994, more than 40 million visits had been recorded by the UK residents, while the rise for foreigners visiting the country was at a comparatively lower level – 25 million. By 1999, the difference is way too large, with more than 50 million UK residents visiting other countries as compared to less than 30 million overseas residents coming to the UK.
In terms of popular destinations in 1999, UK residents chose France to be the first, with over 10 million people visiting annually. Spain is a close second (nearly 10 million), followed by the USA (less than 5 million), Greece and Turkey respectively.
