The two pie charts provide a breakdown of language competence of British scholars in six distinct categories in 2000 and 2010.
It’s clear that over a ten years period, the proportion of bilingual and multilingual students has considerably increased while the number of their monolingual counterparts has by 10% dropped.
With regard to the first chart, we can see that the percentage of students, who were not able to speak any other language except English, double as much as they were in 2010. More ever the percentage of students showing competence in two languages has increased from 15% at the start of the twenty first century to 20 in 2010.
As far as bilingual students are concerned, the figures for Spanish and French speakers experienced totally opposite trends, 5 % drop and 5% rise respectively. In contrast, the figures for the German speaking students stagnated on one out of ten of all scholars. Interestingly, despite these fluctuations the proportion of bilingual students shows no significant disparity (55% of the scholars in both mentioned years).
