The first bar chart displays information about the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on a daily basis and the second one compares the amount of the aforementioned disease hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths among 7 distinctive age groups. Figures were collected in the USA from February 12 to March 16, 2020.
Generally, the country witnessed a significant increase in the COVID-19 cases over the second half of the period. In addition, though very few hospitalizations were reported in children aged 19 or below (no ICU admissions or deaths), these figures of other age groups were extremely high, especially hospitalizations of the 20 – 74s.
As we can see from the first chart, very few Americans became infected with coronavirus in late February as well as the first week of March (below 50). Nevertheless, the number of cases reached approximately 200 on March 8 and continued to rise, though quite oscillating, to 500 on March 14. This figure doubled in mid-March and then decline by one-fifth at the end of the period.
The second chart shows that very few under-19s contracted with the disease. However, the number of hospitalizations was roughly 100 for people aged 20 – 64. The highest was 120 for the 65 – 74s and older people were only recorded 65 or below. Similarly, ICU admissions was highest (35) for the same age group whereas the others only have less than 25 cases. Yet, only a few deaths were reported in people aged under 64, whilst nearly 20 ones were seen in the other age ranges.
