The bar chart illustrates the number of hot dogs and buns eaten in 15 minutes by every winner of “Nathan’s hot dog eating contest” in Coney Island between 1980 and 2010. Overall, there was a significant increase in the amount of food consumed by contest champions over the period shown and most of the winners were from the US and Japan. According to the chart, the first 15 years experienced the domination of the US. The highest number of hot dogs eaten grew consistently from around 9 in 1980 to over 20 in 1996. However, there were two noticeable exceptions in 1983 and 1984. In 1983, there was a Mexican champion with 19. 5 hot dogs consumed while the year 1984 witnessed the only German and female winner Birgit Felden with roughly 8 hot dogs. Furthermore, 2000 was the year started the reign of Takeru Kobayashi with six won continuously with the incredible record of nearly 54 hot dogs consumed in 2006. Then, American Joey Chestnut overtook this title in the next four years. He also set the record for most hot dogs eaten in only 15 minutes to 68 in 2009.
