The diagram illustrates how lead pencil are manufactured in a series of steps.
Overall, the process consists of 12 stages in this process beginning with planting trees and ending with packaging the pencil.
First, some trees are seeded and nursed before replanted 4 months later. After 3 years, the trees get large enough they are thinned to improve the quality of trees. Once the trees reach 14 years old they are cut down to make logs. Later, the logs are cut into thin slates and treated with some chemical for 60 days.
Next, the thin slates are covered with a groove then the black lead is glued to the slate with another empty slate on top to form a sandwich shape, which is heated and hard-pressed later. By this step, the slate is converted into one which is then cut into individual pencils. Following this step, each pencil is painted and stamped and then sharpened ready for packaging stage
