The line graph illustrates the proportion of families who had their own house or rented in England and Whales during a 93 years period.
Overall, the figure for being a tenant or a landlord showed an inverse trend. During the whole period, more people become interested in buying their own property.
In 1918, the proportion of families lived in a rented property was the highest at nearly 75%, whereas that of homeowners was the lowest at approximately 20%. From this year until 2001, the popularity of renting homes decreased significantly by nearly half. By contrast, the proportion of landlords rose by approximately 46% during this period.
Between 2001 and 2011, while the percentage of people who had a propensity for investing money on buying a house decreased from just under 70% to well over 60%, the popularity of renting an accommodation climbed slightly by nearly 4%. It is also worth noting that although the figures for the two styles of owing a property were equally the same at 50% in 1971, over the first 53 years more households lived in rented houses than in their own ones, and from this year onwards, the popularity of being a landlord was always higher than that of being a tenant.
