Give your reasons to explain that the culture aspect plays an integral part in translation m8wOL
Culture plays an important role in translation for a variety of reasons. Firstly, translation is the cultural bridge between the two languages to connect the differences in cultures of both languages. Therefore, translators have to consider cultural aspects of the source document to be able to create a text that is appropriate to the reader’s perception of the target text. Obviously, idiom usually attaches cultural factors so translators will pay more attention to folk images in languages to convert the meaning of the images correctly. For example, when linguists translate the English idiom ‘Diamond cuts diamond’, they will consider which image in the target language’s culture has an equivalent image to get a proper translation. As a result, the translated product is ‘Vỏ quýt dày có móng tay nhọn’ in Vietnamese after adapting cultural image by replacing ‘diamond’ in English into ‘vỏ quýt’ and ‘móng tay nhọn’ in destination language because of the familiar previous images. Considering the culture to avoid misunderstanding in the translated text is the next justification. In fact, there is a case that images of some symbolic organisms in the original language do not fit in the target language. For instance, Bible has the term “Lamb of God” to point out lovers of the Bible but if translators carry this symbol into Vietnamese as ‘Các con cừu của Chúa’ with a literal translation, readers in destination document tend to have no idea what this representational image means. Finally, the word’s meaning is determined by the syntactic content and the cultural content according to Nida Eugene who is an eminent linguist. In consequence, only when linguists comprehend the cultural meaning of the two languages can they overcome the barriers to understanding and explaining the linguistic peculiarities caused by cultural differences. Following that, they overcome hurdles in order to attain the precise message conveyed by the text.
