The first graph depicts the change in the number of marriages and divorces in the United States during a 30-year period beginning in 1970. The second graph shows the proportions of different marital situations among American adults in two years, 1970 and 2000.
Overall, there was a definite decreasing trend in the number of individuals marrying in the United States. Although the majority of adult Americans were married in both recorded years, the number of persons who remained single in 2000 was significantly greater.
In 1970, there were about 2. 6 million marriages and 1 million divorces in the USA. In the following decade, the number of marriages remained stable but then slowly dropped to 2. 3 and 2 million in 1990 and 2000 respectively. In contrast, the number of divorces reached its peak at about 1. 5 million in 1980 before plummeting back to 1 million divorces in 2000.
The rate of adults who never got married in the USA was 15% in 1970 and 20% in 2000 which was significantly lower than the percentage of people who got married at about 70% in 1970 and dropped to 60% in 2000. At the same time, both the proportion of divorces and widows remained lower than 10%, the divorce rate rose up to nearly 10% and the number of widows slightly dropped to 6%.
