Chapter Three: Methodology

Chapter Three: Methodology 0X89
Introduction The main goal of the project is to determine how the trilingual policy in Kazakhstan affects the learning process and the educational system of the country. To achieve a good result, during the research both primary and secondary resources were used; the possibility of bias was minimized, since any obtained information was checked by different sources. Research design In this section I will describe why the research uses a qualitative approach and justify my research methods for data collection. Research design is qualitative because the research requires skills of observing and understanding the reality of people. Also, research results will be based on the opinions of a small number of individuals, and the findings will be written in descriptive language by interpreting the broader meaning of the results. (Creswell, 2012) In order to get primary information, a survey and an interview will be used as tools for data collection. I selected the survey as the appropriate method for this study, because it is important to know opinions of as many people as possible, about issues caused by trilingualism system and significance of studying in English. A survey is a mobile and online tool, so it allows getting results in a fast way and from multiple sources at once. Furthermore, the findings can be quickly visualized in an obvious graph, and consequently, it makes it possible to compare results. (Gaille, 2020) On the other hand, an interview is an effective tool for qualitative research because this research method is based on conversation, which is already preplanned; I have prepared topics to talk about and a list of open-ended questions to ask participants. The important moment is that questions do not have a predetermined list of answers; instead, the interviewee can provide a detailed response with his/her language. (Leavy, 2017) An interview is important method of getting answers to specific questions that were not included in the survey. Sample selection Different sample selection methods were included in research to get true and reliable information. The method, which will be involved for interview is convenience sampling - a non-probability technique, because in this sampling method the researcher selects the participants depending on their accessibility to him/her. (Leavy, 2017) The interview type is semi-structured, because it can build a friendly dialog between two individuals, which is not the case in a structured interview where the interviewer must follow the written questions before the talk. In the semi-structured interview, the questions will be tailored to participant’s respond; the interviewer can form open-ended questions based on what was said during the interview. The method of simple random sampling – a probability technique – will be used to conduct survey, because using probability sampling methods ensures that the sample is unbiased and in a random sample, all people in a population have equal chance to be sampled because the participants are randomly selected. Another advantage of this method is that its results can generalize the population as a whole. (Muijs, 2004) The survey named “Trilingual education system in Kazakhstan” was created on online service (“Google form”), which is specially aimed to collect data. The survey link will be distributed by social networks and there won’t be any criteria for respondents to participate in the survey. Data analysis For the analysis of the data obtained, during the interview, it is necessary to record the whole conversation with the permission of the interviewee and I will save the recordings in my personal laptop, so that only I will have access to. After data collection, I will transcribe the interviews and simultaneously translate them in English. If interviews will be conducted in English, the transcription process will be much easier, as I am planning to use Otter. ai online services platform. For the survey the results will be simply analyzed, since Google form shows the responses graphically, it is easy to find out the most selected answers and collect the data.
Introduction

The main goal of the project is to determine how the trilingual policy in Kazakhstan affects the learning process and the educational system of the country. To achieve a
good
result
, during the
research
both primary and secondary resources were
used
; the possibility of bias
was minimized
, since any obtained information was
checked
by
different
sources.

Research design

In this section I will
describe
why the
research
uses
a qualitative approach and justify my
research
methods
for
data
collection.

Research design is qualitative
because
the
research
requires
skills
of observing and understanding the reality of
people
.
Also
,
research
results
will
be based
on the opinions of a
small
number of individuals, and the findings will
be written
in descriptive language by interpreting the broader meaning of the
results
. (
Creswell
, 2012)

In order to
get
primary information, a
survey
and an
interview
will be
used
as tools for
data
collection. I selected the
survey
as the appropriate
method
for this study,
because
it is
important
to know opinions of as
many
people
as possible, about issues caused by
trilingualism
system and significance of studying in English. A
survey
is a mobile and online tool,
so
it
allows
getting
results
in a
fast
way and from multiple sources at once.
Furthermore
, the findings can be
quickly
visualized in an obvious graph, and
consequently
, it
makes
it possible to compare
results
. (
Gaille
, 2020)

On the other hand
, an
interview
is an effective tool for qualitative
research
because
this
research
method
is based
on conversation, which is already
preplanned
; I have prepared topics to talk about and a list of open-ended
questions
to ask
participants
. The
important
moment is that
questions
do not have a predetermined list of answers;
instead
, the interviewee can provide a detailed response with his/her language. (
Leavy
, 2017) An
interview
is
important
method
of getting answers to specific
questions
that were not included in the survey.

Sample selection

Different
sample selection
methods
were included
in
research
to
get
true and reliable information. The
method
, which will
be involved
for
interview
is convenience
sampling
-
a non-probability technique,
because
in this
sampling
method
the researcher selects the
participants
depending on their accessibility to him/her. (
Leavy
, 2017) The
interview
type is semi-structured,
because
it can build a friendly dialog between two individuals, which is not the case in a structured
interview
where the interviewer
must
follow the written
questions
before
the talk. In the semi-structured
interview
, the
questions
will
be tailored
to
participant’s
respond; the interviewer can form open-ended
questions
based on what
was said
during the interview.

The
method
of simple random
sampling
a probability technique
will be
used
to conduct
survey
,
because
using probability
sampling
methods
ensures that the sample
is unbiased
and in a random sample, all
people
in a population have equal chance to
be sampled
because
the
participants
are
randomly
selected. Another advantage of this
method
is that its
results
can generalize the population as a whole. (
Muijs
, 2004) The
survey
named “Trilingual education system in Kazakhstan”
was created
on online service (“Google form”), which is
specially
aimed to collect
data
. The
survey
link will
be distributed
by social networks and there won’t be any criteria for respondents to participate in the survey.

Data analysis

For the analysis of the
data
obtained, during the
interview
, it is necessary to record the whole conversation with the permission of the interviewee and I will save the recordings in my personal laptop,
so
that
only
I will have access to. After
data
collection, I will transcribe the
interviews
and
simultaneously
translate them in English. If
interviews
will
be conducted
in English, the transcription process will be much easier, as I am planning to
use
Otter.
ai
online services platform. For the
survey
the
results
will be
simply
analyzed, since Google form
shows
the responses
graphically
, it is easy to find out the most selected answers and collect the
data
.
