average energy consumption in an Australian household
average energy consumption in an Australian household bx2e6
The first chart illustrates the average energy consumption in an Australian household while the second chart depicts the greenhouse gas emitted from the energy consumption.
Overall, heating and water heating consumed the most energy in an average Australian household. Water heating and other appliances, however, caused the most greenhouse gas emissions.
The average Australian household depletes the most energy on heating (42%), followed by water heating which energy consumed is over a quarter (30%). In contrast, the average Australian household utilise the least energy on cooling (2%) and lighting (4%). Other than that, the usage of energy on refrigeration and other appliances was 7% and 15% respectively.
Surprisingly, although the average Australian household utilise most of the energy on heating, greenhouse gas emitted from heating was almost threefolds lesser which was 15%. Water heating was the primary culprit behind greenhouse gas emissions, leading with one-third portion (32%) of greenhouse gas released. Other appliances, refrigeration and lightning recorded 28%, 14% and 8% respectively in greenhouse gas emission. Lastly, as expected, cooling generated the least greenhouse gas with a mere 3%.
