Food is considered one of the essential requirements for our survival. This essay will discuss why a huge part of the population in Pakistan is experiencing malnutrition although there is the presence of food wastage in public events and restaurants.
Usually, at public events, the organizers and caterers prepare limited food choices when they do not have any knowledge about the preferences of the attendees which leads to food wastage. Some may like the food served, some may have allergies, and some may not like the food at all. Another reason, some restaurants do not store the leftovers for the day in fear that they may be sued by customers for food poisoning if they will serve it the next day. It is also common that restaurants’ staff are not allowed to give away the leftovers for the day for the same reason.
While a lot of people are suffering from malnutrition in Pakistan, it saddens me that a lot of food goes to waste. With this, I suggest the restaurants create their policy to donate to food banks the remaining edible food they are to throw away every night. Public events with food catering should also limit their servings to guests to avoid food wastage. On decayed food, there are organizations in the community that help in composting them. Proper disposal helps minimize food wastes. We should also work or communicate with the community to keep us updated about their programs about food wastage. There are available technologies such as freezers to preserve and/or prolong the shelf life of some food. We can also be part of some community feeding program or we could launch or join community pantries in our communities.
In this time of the pandemic, we should be thrift as much as we can because everything is scarce, we should value food. It is our responsibility as members of society to care for the hungry while we are privileged to have something to eat at our tables. The small portion of the blessings that we received is never small for people that are in great need.
