The table and graph show 2009 figures for bus ridership and urban population density in London, New York City and Tokyo. The data shows a very loose relationship between the ridership levels of certain forms of public transit and population density. According to the table, subway use is lowest in London and highest in Tokyo, where a third of the local population commutes by metro. Bus service presents an opposite trend, with only about 4% of the population in Tokyo using it versus 40% in London. New York City figures for both transit systems fall between Tokyo and London in all categories. The graph, on the other hand, outlines population density for the above three cities. Tokyo is considered to have the densest population of the three, at just shy of 6000 people per square kilometer. London boasts slightly less than 5000 and New York City is just a shade higher than 2000 people per square kilometer.
