During my trip to the supermarket, I have looked around many items to complete the scavenger hunt table. But unlike my usual trips, I have not only looked at specific products but their packaging as well. However, to my surprise, there were far more products that used more packaging than necessary. One that has caught my eye would be the capsule coffees. These are of single-use, and it comprises of a paper-lined tiny plastic cup filled with coffee grinds and sealed with an aluminum lid. Considering how much they are of use the materials are high.
Additionally, during my scavenger hunt, I can't clearly say whether I could find more recyclable packaging or less, I was able to find a significant number of products that are packaged with recyclable materials but also those that have used non-recyclable ones in similar amounts. Items such as water bottles, cereal boxes, glass bottles for olive oil are some that I found could be recycled. On the other hand, I was able to locate some items that use non-recyclable materials such as chip bags, egg cartons, and ice cream containers. One may be more and less than the other, based on my pure speculations, I could probably say that those that use recyclable items are slightly higher in the Supermarket I have visited for this task.
Packagings are often used for a purpose to protect and preserve a product. Many layers of packaging are used so that it can give a more presentable or appealing presence. Additionally, It is to provide added satisfaction when unboxing or receiving their product. Nevertheless, I do not think the many layers of packaging is with the materials, labor, and environmental effects are worth it unless the product requires that much packing due to its fragility. Fragile items do require extra care so that customers can receive their product in its finest condition once purchased. Packagings do not exist solely for the protection but also for the brand identity, how your consumers or customers may view your company and product.
Products that use more packaging tend to be more expensive per peso. To illustrate, compared to Cereal A using a cardboard box and a plastic, foil-lined bag to contain the product. Those that require a plastic covering on top; certainly add to the cost.
