I am an embedded software engineer working in Alstom India, post my graduation, on the middleware development of our proprietary product CYGAL (Cyber Gateway Alstom). My tang for technology engendered in the year 2008, when for the first time I saw an image of a satellite in my textbook and uttered: “I too want to build this”. Thus, I embarked on a technological odyssey.
My voyage in the ‘Bytes’ space sailed in 2014, during my Higher Secondary, with a basic ‘Hello World! ’ on a console output, and that universe grew ever since. Two years later, in 2016, I enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering with an aspiration to explore and expand my technical horizon in the field of advanced electronics and communication networks.
There is nothing good about the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, except for the fact that it proved the robustness of our digital systems. While the world was barred with a lockdown, people around the globe were connected because of the networks and supporting systems. VoIP, TCP, IP, IEEE802. 11 are a few protocols from the sundry in networks’ pool, which keep our everyday communications going, such is the significance of networking devices and operating protocols, and profound is my ardour in the design and development of them.
With this thesis-based master’s degree in Computing Science, I want to gain expertise in the realm of Systems and Computer Networks, especially on the Layer-2 and Layer-3 protocols, in addition to Sensor Networks and Internet-of-Things (IoT) for which several optimization algorithms are being studied and implemented to improvise the efficiency. I was, and I am, intrigued with the design and development of networks and embedded systems; therefore, during my undergraduate studies worked on the ASIC/FPGA, VLSI to achieve the efficiency of the hardware devices. My interest further burgeoned in the networks during my internship at the Signalling & Telecommunication Department of the Indian Railways in 2018, where I learned how the IP protocol is used to map the giant Indian Railway’s signaling network, and I further worked on backbone ethernet and W-LAN network establishment for our product CYGAL, in Alstom.
During my bachelor’s at Vellore Institute of Technology, I was a project leader and member of the club TEC (The Electronics Club), the projects we did there, apart from the curriculum, played a decisive role in my career development in the field of Software Engineering. Career is a marathon with pregnant checkpoints, and I am, at present, standing on the start flag. With the competence comprehended from this course, I want to craft innovative, efficient networking algorithms, design protocols to exploit the efficiency of base hardware, and generate novel firmware/kernel-level solutions for networking devices. With an unspeakable determination to pursue a doctorate in the near future, my finish line marks the day when my contribution in the field yields to the betterment of this world, and I, same as my professors and my mentors, who nurtured and trained me, would impart the proficiency possessed with the new generations who would lead the future.
The Computing Science discipline at this research-leading institute generating advanced solutions to modern problems will provide me ample opportunities to carve this bolder into the obelisk. The exposure provided at the University of Alberta matures its scholars academically and socially with inter-culture development and peer-learning, as students from across the globe enrich its campus. In addition, the opportunity to contribute to research directly impacting the market and public, collaborative projects with different departments will enable me to possess versatile knowledge, and a possibility to fast track my M. Sc. degree to a Ph. D. kindles me the most. I stand resolute that the Master of Science in Computing Science program at this university offers the perfect blend of courses and exposure that lays a firm foundation onto which the apex of my career will build.
I am a raw clay requesting you, craftsmen, to enable me to carve into a comely pot. With zeal in systems design, industry experience in middleware development, and a craving for academic erudition, I solicit an opportunity to endeavour my yearning for research and development of distributed systems and computer networks.
