Hi, everyone! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe!
My name is Sithu Tun Oo. I have been a student of Blue Sky International since around 2010. I took English proficiency exams, from Movers to IELTS, one after another each year while attending crash courses at Blue Sky International during the summers.
I took the IELTS examination in December 2018, after attending a two-month preparatory course and a one-month intensive course at Blue Sky International. Teacher Hla Win May Oo (aka Tr. Wendy) provided me with a good number of full practice tests. To be honest, my grades were mixed; sometimes pretty satisfying, sometimes not. When December arrived, I took the real IELTS examination and I thought I gave my best.
I believe an overall band score of 7. 5 is actually a very good score in the IELTS examination for a sixteen-year-old candidate, and I am also quite pleased to have achieved it. However, there is still a thought in the unconscious part of my mind that if I had been more careful, I could have achieved a better overall score. Looking at the score report, I found out that I was particularly weak at Reading and Writing. This led me to recall my test experience.
I felt like I did quite well in the Listening section. Fortunately, the score came out good. There are not many tips from me about the Listening section, but the main thing about the Listening section is that if you failed to know what the answer to a question is, just take a guess or just skip that question. Do not drag on to thinking about what could be the correct answer from what you have heard. Since the IELTS Listening section is played just once, you would not want to miss out other questions because you were thinking about a missed one.
In practice exams, the Speaking section had always been a challenge for me. I was not very used to speaking English as much back then, and I have something what we call ‘social anxiety or stage fright. ’ This made me nervous in the Speaking sections and caused me to stammer and trip on my own words. Knowing this, I tried to keep calm during the real test, and it worked. Don’t be afraid of the examiner. Some may be friendly and warm; some may not be. Make your conversations as natural as possible. DO NOT study by heart for the Speaking section. Don’t be afraid to make some mistakes while you talk; just try to keep talking naturally and if that is not possible, just say “Sorry” and make your correction. Watching videos on YouTube – cooking videos, short documentaries, films, reviews, etc. – can help you greatly with your Listening and Speaking skills.
Honestly, I am not quite sure why my Reading score was a bit lower than what I had expected (Please don’t get me wrong. I do not mean to say this in an arrogant way). For the Reading section, try to give more time to the parts that are important, lengthy, and have more questions. It’s good to have a pencil with you which you can use it to hover along words as you read them. This helped me understand the context quicker and find the answer better. If you see an alien word, don’t get confused. Try to finish reading the whole sentence and you will be able to guess the definition of it. Always be aware of the remaining time while taking the Reading section.
The Writing section is where examiners tend to be stingy on giving scores. Try to read articles and watch videos which you find interesting. Learn new words and phrases from them. Examine the way the words and phrases are used. Try not to be repetitive in choosing words. Make sure to deploy a variety of sentence structures as well. Pay attention to your grammar, too!
Those are my tips to achieve a great overall band score in the IELTS examination. I suggest you prepare thoroughly before taking the real examination. Take your time if possible. The more you practice, the better you will perform in the test! Make sure to take a lot of full-length practice tests before you take the actual test. Blue Sky International and Teacher Hla Win May Oo (aka Tr. Wendy) are always there to help you!
Thank you and stay safe, everyone!
