Hi Anna!
What a nice surprise to hear from you! It’s been a long time, but it’s good news that you’ve decided to do a project about people’s reading habits in various countries. I’ll give you some tips and hints about this in Spain.
Let’s get to the point, I suppose the biggest change has been the digitalization of libraries and books, as well as the “colonization” of our lives by social medias. It’s to say that that people are reading faster and less concentrated that some decades ago due to the quicker rhythms of live, in parallel with the vast information available on the Internet.
In other words, adults are reading eBooks while they’re on the metro or the bus just to avoid wasting time, whereas youngsters seem to be reading contents available on social media, what can be a problem is the consumption of fake-news instead of reading a great book. I’d advise you to consider in your project the risk of re-share fake news in relation to how our reading habits are changing. On another note, even if older ones might prefer the paper format, most of them also are being adapted to the latest technologies as they can get access in just one click to whatever they wish.
On the whole, I feel the habit of reading a good romance or science fiction book is being lost as people prefer to read shorter things, what explains the success of files and stories on Twitter, especially for late generations.
Where do you stand on this topic in New Zeland? I hope to see you soon and talk about this face to face, keep me posted!
Best wishes with your project,
Ariadna
