I dreamed of my future as a researcher and a humanist dentist. I took my first step into the profession at Ankara University. Every teacher I have met and had the opportunity to take lessons has given me an aspect of the profession. One of my professors who inspired me said “Primum non nocere” which means “First, don’t hurt the patient” and I have been aware ever since. This awareness strengthened my humanist part and I started a study on anxiety with my professors. Anxiety is a serious psychological state that can turn physiological consequences to the detriment of the patient. Anxiety can even cause serious shock states. Eliminating anxiety is my mission as a humanist dentist because my first mission is to protect my patient. I observed anxiety when I was interning for the first time in the private clinic that is mostly applying implant treatment. I investigated literature and I found that a powerful therapy like aromatherapy was not developing enough. Aromatherapy is a treatment with proven physiological effects and I want to improve that treatment. I am currently studying that with oral surgery patients. Anxiety is a complex, unique psychological state which is divided into different causes so I think eliminating part of anxiety is possible with patient communication. Based on this thought I take the ‘Communication with patient’ class from Michigan University. These lessons gave me an aspect and confidence. I spoke to my patients with the ABT structure of communication, they listened to me more.
I investigated oral pathologies as an undergraduate student who wants to Ph. D. in oral surgery. I studied with my valuable Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Yurttutan. We prepared a case report that investigates Central Giant Cell Granuloma. We published in a scientific congress. I am an ambitious, passionate student willing to devote her life to research.
I am currently in my 4th year at Ankara University and I try to focus on observing oral surgeries, being involved, and seeing cases as much as possible. I try to research with people and topics that inspire me, so we are studying with Salvatore Luca La Terra on laser surgery. I am aware of the digital revolution in dentistry and support the use of technology for more accurate procedures. I tried to understand and learn about technology during my internship. In the digital world is occurring mesmeric and startling changes. Dr. Tansu Erakman is one of the doctors who enlightened me in this field. We did investigate 3D scanners with him. As a young dentist candidate, it is my chance to be aware of this world. I engage with the digital world, I can understand changes quickly.
When reading a book, people choose characters and imagine themselves as them. I was an amateur writer when I was a child and I dreamed of my main character as I want to become. As I grew older, this heroization turned into inspiration. I don't want to become another person, exactly. I want people who inspire me to add sparkle to my life. I see the people I inspire as a light on the path I walk. I was very impressed with your work and mission, your career path, and your humanistic approach, Dear Assistant Prof. Dr. Miriam Bildt. I would love to be your intern for 2 months with the Erasmus + program. I think you will touch my life with your experiences, undoubtedly. I am waiting for news from you with excitement.
