Hello everyone, my name is Phuong Anh and today we will be talking about traditional music in Vietnam.
Quan ho is a type of folk performing art formed in the 13th century by the Vietnamese community in 49 quan ho villages and some neighboring villages in the present two provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang of Vietnam.
Quan ho Bac Ninh is a form of reciprocal singing between men and women. The songs are performed as alternate verses between two women from one village singing in harmony and two men from another village responding to similar tunes, but with different lyrics.
In which people often use bamboo flute and drum as background music. There are also monochord mänəˌkôrd, erhu, zither, lute and organ.
Quan ho songs express and enhance the spirit, philosophy and local identity of communities in the region. Quan Ho seems to be a game instead of a folk music as teams of singers compete with each other through the match of lyrics and of melodies to bring wonderful performance to audiences. The melodies as well as the lyrics are so beautiful and rich in poetry that the appearance of instruments sometimes seems to be abundant; the musical message is sufficient by itself.
Thank you for listening.
