My passion for Data Science is relatively recent, but the preconditions had been there for a long time: love for subjects as logic and math; love for games that involve logical reasoning as chess, which, I think, has some similarities with this field; and also the interest in finding connections between things, even between those that are apparently very different and distant from each other. The first conscious interest in Data Science arose following the Cambridge Analytica case, which, despite the negative aspects, highlighted the potential in this area. Particularly, the fact of being able to extrapolate and predict, from data, which we usually consider "useless", various information and knowledge. While this element may frighten on the one hand, it fascinated me a lot on the other. But the real drive to want to take this path comes from my thesis supervisor and her PhD student. Last year, I attended the research methodology course with them, during which various aspects of Data Science were introduced and its different potentialities were highlighted. In particular, techniques and methodologies of data analysis, data mining, natural language processing, machine learning and much more. From their input, I then began to read and investigate the subject, becoming more and more fascinated by the subject. Last year, due to the current emergency situation, I had more free time not having to work every day. Wanting to use this time in a better way, but also for fun, I decided to learn to program in Python. Once I started I could not stop, a new world opened to me. Later it was suggested to me the Udemy platform, which allowed me to follow different courses in this area: review and enhance programming knowledge and skills, NLP, machine learning, and more. Also, during last year, to improve my statistical skills and knowledge, I did a course, with the SARALAB school, in multivariate statistics with R, and a course in Structural Equation Modeling with R. From this interest and thanks to the acquired knowledge I had the opportunity to conduct a research thesis, which consists of identifying and predicting customer satisfaction through textual analysis of restaurants reviews. This research allowed me to confront myself with different aspects of Data Science: programming, data analysis, statistics, etc. In fact, I wrote a script in python, in order to automatically collect customers reviews on google reviews platform. The program, given the name of a city as input, collects all the reviews of all the restaurants of the city. These reviews were analyzed with LIWC software to identify the underlying psychological aspects. Then, from the LIWC categories, we proceeded with Structural Equation Modeling methodologies, and found some latent psychological dimensions which reflect on customer ratings, so their satisfaction. The innovative thing is that no research viewed LIWC categories as constituent of a PLS-PM model. Moreover, the preliminary study was presented at the Data Science and Social Research conference last December, and at the present time I’m writing the research paper. This experience allowed me to understand that what I want to do in the future is work in this area. Particularly, I would like to join my background in psychology with this field, working in the development of an AI with a Theory of Mind. Also, I would like to work in the improvement of actual algorithms in machine learning, maybe in a way to reduce those biases which contribute to maintain some form of inequity, as gender and racial discrimination. While I was searching for a master degree that could allow me to join my studies in psychology with the passion for data analysis, I found this master in Data Science and I found it fascinating. First of all, it is one of the few masters in Data Science in Europe open not only for those who have a degree in computer science and related fields. Also, it has a lot of courses I’m interested in, particularly those concerning the natural language processing, machine learning, text mining, artificial intelligence, and so on. I like the fact that there is a theoretical approach joined with the hands-on approach. Moreover, I appreciate the intercultural environment with students from all over the world and this is something that can just enrich everyone. Attending this master I will have the opportunity to get to the heart of the subject and get all those competences to become a professional in this multidisciplinary sector. I will get a competitive and sought master degree, which could allow me to get a good job in this area, not only in Italy, but also all around the world. It could give me, in this way, extra gear. After the degree, I would like to work as a researcher, both in academia and industry. Therefore, continue first of all with a PhD, particularly I’m interested in research in Artificial Intelligence, computational psychology and computational human behavior. What I would like to do is work with data and turn them into information and knowledge, find associations, correlations, links, learn and make predictions from them. I want to become a data scientist.
