It is believed that higher education is more beneficial to students than community and, therefore, the cost of it must be covered by them. Although students can take advantage of universities directly, I would argue that fees should be paid or subsidized by the government for certain factors. There are several reasons why I am on the side of supporting students with financial aid and scholarships. Firstly, university's tuition fees are costly in most countries which can offer high-quality education. It is unrealistic that all school-leavers can afford to pursue their academic life regardless of their high potential. If these prospective students are not provided with merit-based or need-based scholarships, society might lose its future leaders.
Secondly, it is undeniable that once university studies are completed, numerous high-performing students start to serve the community in various fields, ranging from military to medicine. Having invested a huge amount of money into education, the government will eventually reap the benefits. For example, after being destroyed in World War II, in order to boost its economy without natural resources, Germany give education financial and administrative support. In turn, its highly educated workforce, today, constitutes Germany's most important economic asset. Thirdly when students do not pay attention to money, they can focus better on their studies. The stress of paying for their education can negatively impact their consideration during the time when they are supposed to be learning.
In conclusion, while the benefits of tertiary education are enjoyed by the individuals, they ultimately contribute to the society. Hence, the cost of it must be paid by the government.
