The pictures below show the comparison between two traditional methods that can be used to collect water for irrigation channels.
The first method is a swing basket, two farmers would bring water up to the irrigation channel from a 1 – 2 meters deep hole that may be near the field. They use a basket made from bamboo or leather and some rope bundle at the basket. At the start, two people hold the ropes which are connected with the basket. Then, they throw the basket into the channel to get water. Finally, the basket is pulled up and water would be poured into the fields.
The second method is called rope and bucket. It differs from the swing basket method, it uses animals to collect water from a depth of 50 meters well. This method consists of a bucket and pulley system. The bucket would be tied to the cow’s body through two ropes: one is attached to the pulley and another is attached to the rollers. When the cow approached the well, the ropes fall inside the well. Then the cow walks downhill, the bucket is pulled up. Water is poured into the irrigation channels.
Overall, both methods are extremely easy to operate. However, it depends on the strength and depth of the water.
