The flowchart below depicts the manufacturing process of how sugar is obtained from the plant of sugarcane.
Overall, the process has a total of seven steps, divided in two parts. The first half has two steps (growing and harvesting the cane) meanwhile the second half of the procedure has 5 steps (namely crushing the cane, purifying the juice, evaporation, separation and lastly, drying and cooling).
Firstly, sugarcane is grown in farms, which takes 12 to 18 months to ripen. After they are fully grown, the plants are harvested and transported to a sugar factory. In the factory, the canes are crushed to extract the juice. After which the juice is purified with help of a limestone filter.
Subsequently, the purified juice is put in an evaporator which is heated at the bottom until the excess water evaporates turning the juice into syrup. Once syrup is procured it is passed through a centrifuge in order to separate the sugar crystals from the sugar syrup. Lastly the separated sugar crystals are dried and cooled to produce sugar.
