Those who studied the Latin language, including monks who read Bible books on Latin manuscripts, wrote in the text of manuscripts over obscure or difficult to understand words English-Saxon equivalent translations or more understandable, common Latin the words in order to facilitate the reading of the latter. Similar explanations of difficult foreign words are called glosses in science. From time to time, some monk wrote all incomprehensible Latin words from the manuscripts with their translations into English-Saxon, and then glossaries were obtained. Sometimes to memorize Latin words there was compiling a list of English words at first, and then Latin equivalents were searched for and attributed to them. In other words, it was one of the first educational Latin-English and English-Latin dictionaries. Several of those glossaries have come down to our days. The most ancient of them, dating back to the VIII-IX centuries are Corpus Glossary, Leiden Glossary, Erfurt Glossary.
