Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that a true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

What is the main function of a university has been a controversial issue in contemporary society. Therefore, it is crucial to examine whether universities should give their students the opportunities to acquire useful skills or teach them only academic knowledges. It has been a traditional role of a university for a long time to grow students as the intellectuals especially about their major subjects. To understand about a certain scholarship, it is a basis and essential to learn about histories and academic notions. Yet, if colleges focus on academic teaching only, the knowledges which provide in universities can be useless in reality. According to a suvey of Seoul University(2020), more than half of the SNU professors answered that they agree on the need for teaching a practical knowledge and try to offer it in their lectures. Thus, to overcome demerits of academic focusing, the following topics deserve due consideration. First and foremost, there is a need to look at what is the role of the intellectuals in our society. The intellectuals have obligations to lead people toward the right side against problems such as climate crisis, polarization, inequality and so on. Also, a purpose of universities is to educate students and make them contribute to our communities. To grow the intellectuals who is needed in our society while realize the true goal of a university, the knowledges related in real situations should be offered. In conclusion, I believe that the reasons discussed above lead us to advocate that the main function of a university is offering useful knowledges and skills needed in our society and workplace.
