Before I learn behavioural science, my perspective toward people why they behave in that way only because of their desire makes them behave in that way.
From learning behavioural science, I have understood that there are many secrete why we behave and factors that affect our thoughts and decision making. Through the learning process, I realize that there is a different reason why people are not compliant with a medical ailment. Besides personality and characteristics, there are external and internal factors that are influencing people behaviour and social factor. Social factors such as age, gender, or economic class in the society. Economic class reflex a person’s education level, income status and occupation. Personality and characteristics in society refer to psychological characteristics. These psychosocial environments are the factor that influences a person to behave, and I react like “huh? Why? ”.
It has impressed me that patient perspective on their health and illness can determine from so many factors. As I only think that patients not following healthcare advice because they think that self-healing works than medicine. Now I know that not just because of their perspective preventing them, there are external factors that are acting as a barrier to them.
Moreover, what I have learned is being used by healthcare workers to invent an intervention aim to improve people or patients to take seriously to their health. There is various of position statement in healthcare work together using model and theory as a framework to help them understand the patient better and planning a care plan best for the patient.
There is a theoretical model, Health Belief Model. Is a theory for us to understand the decision-making of a person. This model consists of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barrier, cues to action and self-efficacy. It gives a theoretical structure to look at people decision making toward health promotion or prevention.
My father 45 years old diagnosed with hypertension. When he knew he had a chronic disease, he did nothing about his disease. I once thought it was because he is confident to himself that he would not be affected. From the learning, I realize that he was a technician, his salary could not afford the expensive medical bills and he does not know much about hypertension and the impact. If I never learn Behavioural Science, then I might not have communication with him and would not know that occupation and knowledge can be a problem blocking him to get better. From what I know, occupation is just a work that he has, and knowledge of disease is not necessary, because the doctor will tell everything.
By using this model, I can identify and predict people’s decision-making process and explain why people are changing their behaviour and why people do not make changes. For instance, perceived susceptibility refers to how the person thinks of himself toward the risk of acquiring a health problem. After I have conducted with my father, I can determine that his perceived susceptibility is low because he lives in a life with junk food and no exercise even though he had diagnosed hypertension.
From there continue, I will be using Health Belief Model to assess and determined further his belief and intervene that corresponding to his perceives. For example, I can generate an intervention to increase his perceived susceptibility to let him understand that if he not making any changes, he is at risk of acquiring serious diseases.
Part of that, I can predict his behaviour changes. For example, if his perceived susceptibility increases, he has a high possibility will engage in health promotion activity to improve his health and the reason is he knows that he has the risk of getting other diseases.
Learning Behavioural Science teaches me how to assess people’s or patient perceptions and understand their behaviour. Throughout the learning, I acquire the ability to assess, verify and estimate the reason and come up with a plan.
Furthermore, I had also impressed by the Transtheoretical Model of Behavioural Change (TTM). It is a structure to show a personal behavioural change process. This model consists of 6 stages which are pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse. This model assists provide a guideline to identify which stages a person is in and assess appropriate intervention to be given. More than that, Transtheoretical Model should also look at the person’s social information, such as age, gender, ethnicity, financial status, occupation, and education.
My father is due to financial status and low knowledge level barrier caused him not to make an alternative change to his chronic disease. In Health Belief Model, after my father know that he is at risk, he then commits to figure a plan to make changes. In this situation, I can determine that my father is in the preparation stage. But the social factor act as the barrier, he is stopped to proceed with health promotion or prevention. To proceed into the next stage of TTM first is to figure out what is nursing intervention can help or provide him so that he is well prepared and can move to the next TTM which is the action stage.
Social information is essential for us to identify and understand a person’s behaviour, why he behaves in that way, and how we can help. After knowing which stage TTM a patient is in, we then will discover the reason why he is not moving to the next stage and make an intervention to help so that he could continue to proceed with the TTM. For me, I always thought that to change a behaviour, it just needs to be persistence, never thought that it can be a model to identify people’s behaviour change.
As a nurse, we should understand our patient for the reason of their behaviour aim to let us have a better understanding to our patient and make the correct intervention or solution to the patient if the patient is not compliance to medical treatment. By using learning content in Behavioural Science, I will first understand the patient background to check the social factor that influences their decision and influence regarding the treatment. After had understood patient’s situation, I will apply the Health belief Model combine with Transtheoretical Model as a guideline to identify which stage the patient is in and from there, I can customize an accurate and efficient nursing intervention to shift the patient behaviour from not compliance to actively engage in health promotion.
Appreciate what my tutor had tough me. It gave me more perspective and learned to understand the reasons behind human behaviour.
