Prior studies conducted in western countries reveal that narcissism positively predicts leadership emergence. Narcissists emerge as leaders because, high in agency (confident, decisive, and dominant) and low in communion (warm and caring), they fit the leadership prototype of western societies. This study first argues a cultural difference (China v. s. Western countries) in the relationship between narcissism and leadership emergence. With a higher level of collectivism, Chinese people expect leaders to be high in communion and thus show less preference for narcissistic leaders than do people in western cultures. Furthermore, the cultural difference in the relationship between narcissism and leadership emergence is moderated by contextual uncertainty. Under high uncertainty, due to Chinese people’s higher level of uncertainty avoidance, the cultural difference will diminish. An experiment is designed to test the three-way (narcissism, culture, and uncertainty) interaction.
