In this set of material, the reading expresses that population of the yellow cedar, have been dwindling for more than a century, and then brings three reasons for this occurrence, however the lecture finds all reasons inadequate; hence the information the professor provides contradicts the fact outlined in the reading passage. First of all, the reading proposes this hypothesis that possibly the cedar bark beetles have been affecting on reduction of the cedar trees, in contrast the lecture claims that a healthy cedar tree has a great resistance to these types of beetles because the healthy cedar tree include a chemical substance which it can kill these beetles, therefore this theory is rejected. Second, the author of reading passage declares that the brown bears claw at the cedars to feed the tree bark. inasmuch there is a kind of sugar in cedar's bark that it is common in brown bears' diet, so this type of trees are favorite of bears; consequently this feeding habits in the bears can have harmful impacts on cedar trees and weaken them; on the contrary the lecture contends that it is not an appropriate reason for total reduction of cedars, because cedars have been reducing in all of regions of North America like its islands and there is not any bear in islands. Third, the reading believes that climate change can be the salient sake for this reduction. Cedar's root used to start growing in the early spring, but now its root commence to grow in the late of winter, subsequently the frozen roots can kill the cedar trees, conversely this idea is challenged by the speaker. It goes without saying that in high elevation the weather is cold and vice versa in low elevation the weather is hot, however it is interesting that majority of cedar trees have killed in low elevation.
