Businesses are crucial for the progress of our communities. It seems like yesterday when Covid-19 put a halt on routine life. The victims are everywhere; businessmen and women, white-collar and blue-collar workers, communities; parents and children, friends and neighbours. The absence of routine life, away from school and friends, laid a fresh perspective upon me. Businesses are crucial. Prior to this, I had relied on the textbook definition of business which was impractical. However, amid the current challenges, organisations and individuals have found creative ways to solve complex problems and address the shifts in consumer needs and demands. This presented a new definition of business - providing an innovative solution to a complex problem and building a system of efficient processes - which puts more emphasis on value creation. I want to create more value for the community. Hence, I need to develop my understanding of business fundamentals. It is upon this enlightenment that I want to study Business Administration at the City University of Hong Kong [CityU].
A-levels facilitate an in-depth understanding of key principles in Business Studies, Accounting, and Economics. My personal decisions have been influenced by concepts and procedures from these subjects. For example, accounting concepts aided in maintaining my finances. This habit developed an interest in bookkeeping. Looking to further build on this interest, I joined the Mangrove teens organisation. I am currently appointed as the treasurer at this organization. It allows me to manage and review larger sums of funds by applying financial reporting; breakeven analysis, cash flows, and income statements. Bachelor's degree holds the ability to escalate this interest - which started from journaling my petty cash - into managing huge sums of money in the business world. Recently, I was presented with an award for the best marketing techniques and promotion strategies in the business competition - “The Budding Entrepreneurs of MISB 2020. ” I applied knowledge from case studies based on business communication and marketing, to help steer my team. Getting the right message out was the key. Hence, we opted to advertise on social media platforms where a series of a/b testing determined the right mix of images, captions, and tags for our target audience. This resulted in the highest conversion rate; the highest sales. However, this experience taught me that in real life there are a lot more variables to account for. This makes business even more exciting. I look forward to factoring in these variables when participating in case competitions and taking part in startup initiatives. I believe Hong Kong has the right dynamics for my career ambitions due to its unique positioning - the international hub of finance and gateway to China - allowing for immense value creation opportunities.
During the 2021 summer break, I interned at the business development department of Nai Nath Commodities Co Ltd. I learned about stocks and various concepts - a distinction between technical and fundamental analysis. My tasks involved following a set of rules to identify financially stable companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange. This list was further discussed within the team. Being part of these discussions further raised my enthusiasm to study business administration, so I can actively voice my analysis in such meetings in the future.
Being an Indian, but spending my life in Thailand, all the while studying with students from a variety of backgrounds, I understand the value that each culture brings to the table. My interests reflect this diversity - I spend my time in the creative field with dancing, and also the physical field, with Muay Thai boxing. These have inculcated in me qualities such as patience, self-discipline, and stage courage. I look forward to applying these in the ventures that I take on at [CityU] - the Society of investment and finance, hackathon competitions, and HKTECH 300. Studying business administration and being a part of a university with such a wide range of opportunities, can create a strong foundation of cognizance within me, paving a pathway for me to a more successful business future.
