I and my class had a chance to talk to Mr. Ho Anh Khue in a mini talk show that lasted for 50 minutes in Zoom on December 14, 2021. He is an associate in Baker McKenzie – one of the top law firms in Viet Nam, he studied Bachelor of Law at the School of Law. He was a member of the Global Era Scholarship – A scholarship that is supported by Vietnam Law firms. The meeting topic was mostly about the way Mr. Khue achieved his success and his experience in that way: time management, study, intern, scholarship, extracurricular activities. Mr. Khue was affable and amenable. In the beginning, Mr. Khue introduced his job in Baker McKenzie as a project, construction, and M&A lawyer. Mr. Khue shared how he could get GES. It was all about the enthusiasm with the legal profession. The legal profession was a niche market, so candidates had to show the legal profession enthusiasm, basic skills like legal English skills, communication skills, and legal background that could fulfill top tier law firms’ requirements and increase competitiveness. He started his very first internship in VILAF and then gradually push his career up in other top law firms. One tip that Mr. Khue mentioned was that completely understands employers: who they are, which field do they most focus on, who would be your interviewers, and so on. This made sure you can answer the interviewers’ questions fluently and find a suitable company to apply to. He confessed that at the time he got GES, he could not manage his schedule between study, extracurricular activities, and personal life. As a person who spent a lot of time in study and club tasks, I felt sympathy, cause when it turned to exam season or club events, I could not have time to eat healthily or sleep enough. Mr. Khue was vice president of SOL English Club and translator of a legal center of the School of Law at the same time. After scanning Mr. Khue’s CV and listening to his sharing, I learned some precise lessons. Firstly, it was about preparing things to write down in a CV. It mind be unnecessary at glance, yet, actually crucial to let the hirer see the candidate’s abilities both academic and basic. Mr. Khue had leadership skills by being the vice president of a university club, legal English skills by being a translator, and his GPA was also adequate to show his knowledge background. These skills and experience were key features that explain why he could get GES. Moreover, being a member of GES was a highlight in his profile that employers could consider him as a potential candidate. Secondly, he influenced me to study academic English and legal English a lot. I know that besides having a strong knowledge background, using foreign languages fluently is a plus point.
