This table illustrates how many people used three important airports in the UK between 1998 and 2003.
The numbers are given in million.
Overall there was a steady growth in the numbers of all three airports visitors until 2000; however, it
is striking that one of the top 3 major and important airports of UK, Heathrow, experienced some
falls and the other one, Stansted, leveled off at a certain point after 2000 without any important
changes in numbers.
To begin with, looking at Heathrow airport visitors, there was a gradual increase in numbers starting from 27. 2 million in 1998 to 48. 2 million in 2000. Then the figure plummeted by 15 million until 2002
but it regained its visitors and the numbers rose to 45. 6 million after a year.
As regards Gatwick and Stansted, they both continued growing gradually in the number of visitors.
Gatwick started from 36. 5 million in 1998 hit the peak at 69. 3 million in 2003 which is the highest of
all other two airports while Stansted visitors rose from 17. 3 million in 1998 to 39. 9 million in 2000
then leveled off at 43. 3 million 2001 until to years later. The interesting point is that Stansted had the highest rate of growth of all three in the first 4 years of the period.
