The two given maps illustrate the changes in an area of the town of Poulton over the course of 35 years starting in 1900.
As can be seen from the maps, the town witnessed spectacular developments over the period shown. The predominant changes are that residental zones improved, and wasteland were exploited to make way for other facilities.
First, there are several developments concerning the North side of Baylay Street. An old factory along with the terraced houses were demolished in order for the new Baylay Mansions to erect. The wasteland to the East of the factory was also removed to make space for the relocation of the laundry and café. The area between Trent around Trent Street was also modernized with the replacement of flats instead of terraced houses. Besides, Trent Street was also connected to Baylay Street.
Looking at the Southern area of Baylay Street, terraced houses and wasteland were flatten in order to construct Baylay Street Park with a small children’s play area inside it. Due to the relocation and removal of th café and Railway workers’ cottages respectively, a new road call New Land along with shops were built to the South-east. The railway line was also torn down.
