The line graphs illustrate the fluctuation in household electrical appliances in a given country from 1920 to 2019 and the results on housework undertaken per week.
It is evident that households with appliances that use electricity become more and more popular over time, especially refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. In the opposite trend, the total time spent on housework decreased dramatically in the research period.
As can be seen from the first chart, beginning with almost 0% in 1920, refrigerators witnessed the most significant rise, to 90% in 1960, after 40 years and reached a peak at fully 100% around 1980. In the same period of time, vacuum cleaners, which started higher at 30%, experienced a similar trend and rose steadily to 90%. Between 1980 and 2019, the ownership of refrigerators was still constant at 100%, while vacuum cleaners were taken 20 years to increase by 10% and kept as high as refrigerators in the following years. In contrast, the proportion of washing machines went up from 40% to 70% in the first 40 years, then saw a slight drop to around 64% in 1980. It finally recovered to finish the period at above 70%.
Regarding the remaining line graph, the time spent washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning fell by 30 hours in 1960, from 50 hours at the beginning. The mentioned electrical appliances helped them reduce housework time, which made the decline more gradual, bottoming at above 10 hours by 2019.
