From 1990 onwards the percentage of exports to Japan had dropped to nearly 17% in 2012. By contrast, after increasing to nearly 17% 5% in 2000, the figure for China then experiencing a significant rise, surpassing Japan and becoming the leading export market of Australia, with at about 28% in the last year. During the same period, exports to the US fluctuated and then declined to 7% in 2012 while a gradual increase by 3% was seen in the figure for India, with at 5% in the final year.
