The line graph compares the carbon dioxide emissions per capita produced by four different countries over a period of 40 years.
Overall, rising trends were shown in Italy and Portugal per capita emissions while UK and Sweden managed to reduce emissions for the whole period. It is clear that UK was by far the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide from 1967 to 2007.
In1967, UK released nearly 11 metric tonnes, followed by Sweden, Italy and Portugal, with figures reaching around 9, 4. 2 and 1 respectively. During the next two decades, emissions in the UK first remained stable between 1967 to 1977, then saw a fall to 10 metric tonnes in 1987, while the second biggest contributor, Sweden, increased to more than 10 metric tonnes in 1977, but dropped to around 7 metric tonnes during the period from 1977 to 1987. By contrast, there were an annual rise in the carbon emissions by the other two countries, reaching about 7 metric tonnes(Italy) and 3 metric tonnes(Portugal) in 1987.
Between 1987 and 2007, the emissions by UK and Sweden continued to fall, down to around 8. 8 metric tonnes and 5. 8 metric tonnes finally. After an increase showed in the years 1987 and 1997, Italy and Portugal, stayed constant at around 5 metric tonnes and 7. 8 metric tonnes over the rest ten years.
