The line chart illustrates how many single people lived in Great Britain according to five different age ranges between 1996 and 2012.
Overall, the number of people in the 45-64 and 75+ age groups increased and the most significant rise can be seen in the 45-64 age range. In addition, there were little changes in people from 65 to 74 years old, whereas the youngest age group nearly saw no changes throughout the period.
In 1996, the majority of those living alone belonged to people aged 75 and over, followed by the 45-64 and 25-44 age groups, respectively. However, the number of peolple in the three age ranges changed by varying degrees. Although those in 45-64 and the 65+ age ranges both witnessed an upward tendency in the period of 16 years, the former outstripped the latter, at about 2. 4 million people and approximately 2. 1 million people, respectively. As for people aged 25-44, over the first half of the period, there was a slight growth to around 1. 8 millions in 2003 before dropping again to the same level as in 1996.
Moreover, there was very little change in the other two age groups. From 1996 to 2005, the number of people from 65 to 74 years old witnessed an insignificant drop to about 1. 3 millions then recovering to the same level as in 1996 by 2012. In terms of the youngest age range, the figure remained stable at around 0. 25 millions in the whole period.
