The graph illustrates the areas (in square kilometres) of the Brazilian Amazon where the trees were cut down from 2008 to 2017, due to some categories described in the pie chart. During these 9 years the rates of deforestation had in general decreased, even if there were two significant peaks in 2011 and 2014. The main causes of this sad phenomenon was for sure small-holder agriculture and cattle pasture. At the start of 2008 the area deforested was almost 35000 square kilometres, whereas in 2017 was merely about 5000. In 2009 the rates decreased over 20000, but straight away after that they reached 27000 square kilometres. Then the line went down and up again between 2011 and 2013. Beyond this point the rates had always decreased until reaching about 5000 square kilometres of deforested area in 2016/2017. Other major causes of deforestation, in addiction to small-holder agriculture (35%) and cattle pasture (25%), were large-scale agriculture, that was 20%, logging with 15% and the last 5% was due to other causes.
