Overall, Australia became a more popular place for foreign students, especially among Indonesian citizens that had the highest number of people studying there. At the beginning of the period, the figure for Malaysia was the highest with about 5000 students compared with just under 2000 students for the rest of the countries. Meanwhile, the number of students in other countries dramatically increased to 10000 due to the period between 1982 and 1989. However, one year after, in 1990, the number of students coming from Malaysia was overtaken by Hong Kong and by Indonesia in 1993. The figure for Indonesia dramatically rose and in 1997 reached a peak of 27000 students. On the contrary, Hong Kong's figure remained constant, only in 1997 started the growth and achieved a peak with 18000 by 2000. Moreover, there was a slight increase for students from Singapore throughout the years with reaching the same level as Hong Kong.
