The diagram shows the cyclic life process of a large fish species called the salmon. It consists of three main stages depicting the growth and migration of the salmons depending on its age.
In first stage, in order to lay eggs, the adult salmon migrates from open sea to slow moving water area like river. It lay the eggs under small stones which are residing beneath the reeds. Merely at 5-6 months, the eggs hatch into small fishes called “fry” which are usually 3-8 cm in size.
In next phase, the small creatures move to fast flowing lower part of river, where it spends about 4 years in growing to 12-15 cm(approximately) in size. These almost grown up fishes are called “smolt”.
Later, these smolts migrate to open sea and lives there for about 5 years. In 5 years they grow upto 70-76 cm long. Now these adult salmons are fully grown and are ready to lay eggs. These adults migrate to slow moving river to lay eggs. The process continues for every generation.
Finally, it can be seen that the total life time of salmon is approximately 9 years, and it changes its habitats as it grows.
