The graphs below show the enrolments of overseas students and local students in Australian universities over a ten year period.

The line graphs illustrate the enrolments for international students and local students in universities of Australia between 2001 and 2010. Overall, total number of both international and local students significantly increased over the period. Number of new international students also experienced a considerable growth, whereas new local students almost remained stable. In year 2001, there were exactly 20. 000 international students in Australian universities meanwhile the number was being recorded at 4 million in local students. From 2001 to 2004 international students doubled to 40. 000 whilst home students rose to around 5. 5 million. Between 2004 and 2010, number of home students slightly increased and then remained at the same point from year 2007, recorded at 6 million in 2010. On the other hand there was a gradual incline in international students in the same time period, reported at 80. 000 in 2010. Regarding the commencing students, the numbers were similar to the total numbers. Commencing international students increased from 15. 000 in 2001 to 20. 000 in 2006 and finished the time period at just over 40. 000. Commencing home students however, hit the peak at nearly 2. 5 million in 2002. After falling slightly to just under 2 million in 2004, number of commencing home students did not experience a considerable change.
